When hot shot pilot Billy Covington (Robert Downey Jr) loses his job at a radio station in LA while doing some crazy maneuvers trying to save some lives, he is approached by an interesting stranger. The stranger offers him the possibility of employment in Laos working for a private company called 'Air America'. Seeing no other good options he takes the job and soon finds himself in the company of Gene Ryack (Mel Gibson) who works for Air America, but runs guns as a side business. Soon enough Billy finds himself embroiled in the mess that is Air America and Laos in the late 60s and he and Gene must band together to survive attempts to frame and kill Billy, and Gene by association, by both natives and Air America officials.
